Founded in 1975 in Southern California, Joico began life as the small project of a single salon owner who wanted to develop superior hair care products that put the 'joi' back into haircare. At the time, taking a scientific approach to haircare was unprecedented, and by 1976 the rest of the United States wanted Joico hair care products to use at home. Later that year, scientists working for Joico discovered how to synthesise Human Hair Keratin Protein (HHKP), a protein that's naturally present in hair. Since then, all Joico products use Human Hair Keratin Protein (HHKP) to nourish and rebuild damaged and dry hair.

But Joico's contribution to haircare technology didn't stop there. In the 1980s, they developed their own Triamine Complex formula, and in the 1990s this was improved upon with the introduction of the Cationic Triamine Complex, both of which help to rebuild hair. These key ingredients were finally combined into one in 2006 with the introduction of Joico's Quadramine Complex, which is now packed into Joico's shampoos, conditioners, reconstructors and styling aids.
